Ever hear your members say “hey I think we need more________________”??? And you aren’t sure exactly how to handle it?

They mean well…but your members are not the experts.

YOU ARE.

People come into your gym because you are guiding them to their best health and fitness. That means enrolling them in WHY each piece of the daily training is designed to reach their goals in the short term…

Coaching is part science, and part art [with some other parts in there too].

A big aspect of the ‘art’ of coaching, is helping educate your members about your training so they actually enroll themselves into what is right for them!

When I first heard this, it sounded crazy…I was going to just tell them how it works & that would be that!

But each member has their own goals & reasons for being in your facility – their own background & biases for coming to you. We can’t expect that they understand on day 1 how long term physical development works – they’re basically white belts – and being a white belt is a GOOD thing if you have a plan to get them to progress. If a white belt represents the absense of knowledge, it’s our job as coaches to help create a real knowledge base in them, while showing them the path forward.

When they come to you asking for [and enter your favorite here] “_______________?”

-why don’t we do more 1RM’s…more longer metcons…more chippers…less chippers…something they saw on instagram, something they heard they do at their friend’s gym…

That’s great – and we should be happy they have built enough trust to tell you what they’re hoping to do. But that’s just it – they are associating the output of training [aka, my friend is jacked] with something they either heard or saw them do, which may or may not [to be kind] be the aspect of their training that got them that result…or especially that got them that SUSTAINABLE result.

We can’t confuse their looking for the outcome & the outputs of their training…with what the inputs & the starting points of their training need to be. But we do have to educate them about it.

How often? At every chance we get. Every day. We go over the 5 most important times to do this in you classes every day in our New Gym & Coach Onboarding Certification along with the daily videos, session plans, & monthly coaching education to continue building upon this conversation for years to come.

Yes – it is easier to mix it up, try to spice it up  – and yes, there is a balance between those two that we spend hours each month building for you…but not at the cost of educating your members.

Why? Because your members are not the experts. You are. Great coaching staffs are even enrolling their members into the how & why of ‘fun’ workouts vs the daily training that is really driving their long-term results with you.

It’s not the easiest approach. But you didn’t sign up for easy. It is though, an honest approach that is built to last.

As coaches we signed up to give our members the very best we can, and we’re proud to help gives save time & do this at an impactful level each month.

That’s long term retention. That’s real coaching.
